Square boat spikes are often considered better than round spikes for several reasons, particularly when it comes to securing parking blocks and speed bumps to asphalt, gravel or dirt. 

1. Better Grip and Holding Power

• Square spikes displace more material (asphalt, gravel or dirt) as they are driven in. This creates a stronger bond between the spike and the soil, preventing loosening over time.
• Round spikes are more prone to working loose because they don’t displace material in the same way, and the soil will eventually conform to their shape.
• Square spikes have a larger surface area compared to round spikes of the same nominal size. The circumference of a 1/2" round spike is 1.57", the perimeter of a 1/2" square spike is 2" - the square spike has 27% more surface area than the 1/2" round spike. This greater surface area means more contact with the soil, asphalt or gravel and helps distribute stress and reduces corrosion at contact points. This leads to longer-lasting fastenings in parking environments.

2. Resistance to Twisting

• The square shape prevents the spike from rotating within the asphalt, gravel or soil. This is crucial in parking environment where parking blocks or speed bumps are exposed to constant vibrations and shifting forces.
• Round spikes are more likely to twist and lose their holding capacity, leading to potential failure.

3. Corrosion Resistance

• Galvanized square spikes are treated to resist corrosion and rust. This leads to longer-lasting fastenings in parking environments.

4. Historical and Traditional Use

• Square spikes have a long-standing reputation in boatbuilding and ship construction, which speaks to their reliability. Many classic and traditional boat designs specify square spikes for authenticity and performance.
